9 Best Low Calorie Popcorn Seasoning
9 unique low calorie ideas for sweet and savory popcorn seasonings!
Popcorn can be a satisfying low calorie snack, depending on the seasoning. Extra butter and caramel popcorn definitely have more calories than air popped.
Plain popcorn can get a little boring after a while. Brands have started making more flavors, like coconut oil, olive oil and herb and others. If you have a popcorn popper at home and want to jazz up your seasonings I tested some sweet and savory toppings and included my favorites below.
Popcorn in a healthy snack 1 cup has:
- 35 calories
- 7 grams of whole grains
- 2 grams fat
I like being able to mix up the flavor of the snacks I eat, something spicy one day and cheesy the next. Mixing up your own popcorn is a great way to mix up the flavors, without having to finish the bag to try a new flavor.
The seasoning sticks best to freshly popped popcorn, but you can also use pre-popped. I tried microwaving it for about 15 seconds to see if the oils would heat up and make it stick better, but I’m not sure if it did much.

1) Elote seasoning
Elote seasonings is a little spicy, cheesy, nacho seasoning. I got this one from trader Joe’s and love it on popcorn.
2) Jalapeno Ranch
Sometimes I like popcorn using just a sprinkle of a ranch packet and giving it a kick with a dash jalapeño or cayenne powder. It reminds me of ranch Doritos, ranch with a crunch.
3) Mushroom Umami
This Mushroom Umami is also a Trader Joe’s product made with mushroom powder and red pepper. I think Target also carries a similar spice blend. It makes the popcorn have a great savory taste.
4) Zaatar
Za’atar is a blend of spices with sesame, and herbs like thyme and oregano. It gives popcorn an herb flavor and packs a punch, you don’t need very much. I got this one a Trader Joes, but other stores carry it like Target.
5) Nutritional Yeast
Nutritional Yeast is a little sweeter, but savory and has a mild cheesy taste. You can mix this with other seasoning or have it one its own. It’s very popular on popcorn.

6) Sugar Free Pudding
I used pistachio pudding mix, and it makes the popcorn taste like the marshmallows in lucky charms, which let’s face it, is the best part. Because it’s a fine powder it sticks well to the popcorn. I think other flavors of pudding would be tasty as well like vanilla or butterscotch.
7) Cinnamon and Sugar
I used monk fruit powder instead of sugar. This combo reminds me of a churro flavor.
8) Peanut Butter
I used peanut butter powder mixed with a little monk fruit powder for this popcorn seasoning idea. It is a tasty combo, but I think it would be better with a little cocoa powder as well, because it doesn’t get much better than a peanut butter chocolate combo.
9) Chocolate
I used cocoa powder and monk fruit powder. If you like dark chocolate you’ll like this. It was hard to get a mild chocolate flavor without it being too bitter.
