Why make your croutons?

If I’m being honest, I also love store bought croutons. After all, you can get a full bag for around a dollar. However, as an empty nester that loves to bake sourdough bread, and tempted to eat a full loaf in one sitting, I knew I had to repurpose my loaf of sourdough to keep me from devouring it as soon as it came out of the oven.

Besides, last time I bought a bag of croutons from the store, there was literally only 5 croutons and the rest was crushed crouton powder. That’s not an exaggeration! All my croutons were crushed.

So, just a few weeks ago, I started baking my own croutons, and now I can’t WAIT to eat my green salad every day!

My go-to sourdough recipe is

  • 80 g starter
  • 365 g warm water
  • 25 g rye flour
  • 475 g bread flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt

There are bloggers who are MUCH better and writing out hte process for baking sourdough bread than I am. So, I’ll direct you to Alexandria, the queen b of sourdough and her process that has worked for me. Here’s that article!

After you master the baking of the sourdough, getting this guided cutting box has been a game changer for me! With making my sourdough slices similar in size, I could then cube the slices into pieces for the homemade croutons.

Bonus: Add your croutons to a low calorie soup! Here’s my favorite low calorie soup, tomato!

After making the sourdough pieces,

  • I then arranged them on a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • Sprayed with butter flavored cooking spray
  • Sprinkled with salt
  • and sprinkled with the Feast Mode Farmhouse ranch seasoning.
  • Then, I baked it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes *watching it carefully to not burn it!

so, if you’re trying to get more green salads into your life to help you on your weight loss journey, you’ve got to make some homemade sourdough croutons!!
