It’s unbelievable that you can drink a protein shake or smoothie these days and it can taste so close to a high calorie, indulgent milk shake! I love all the flavors and brands available on the market today.

Low calorie protein powders

When I’m looking for a protein powder, I look for ones that are around 100-120 calories for one scoop (or 32 grams). Most pure protein powders meet this requirement. If it’s pure protein, but their scoop is extra large, it will look like it has more calories, but for 32 grams, it’s likely 100-120 calories. (see my favorite protein powder and their calories here)

Basic protein shake ingredients:

My protein shakes usually have the same ingredients. I almost always use,

  1. Protein powder (any flavor)
  2. skim milk or almond milk
  3. sugar free pudding mix
  4. and whipped cream or other flavored toppings.

These pattern works well for me. I like thicker protein shakes. In fact, I prefer them so thick, that I have to eat it with a spoon like pudding. Using the sugar free pudding mix, and half as much liquid helps with that.

BUT- Today I decided to add some Greek yogurt to make it a little creamier and boost the protein a touch!

My final recipe was for the protein shake was:

  • 1 scoop Caramel Toffee Protein Powder
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1/4 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar free vanilla pudding mix
  • 1/2 cup ice

Toppings (they are included with the calories and macros)

  • 1 tablespoon whipped cream
  • 1 tablespoon Walden Farms caramel Dip
  • 1 teaspoon toffee bits

Do I have to use caramel toffee protein powder

You don’t! In fact, the flavor wasn’t that strong. I think you can get the same thing by using vanilla protein powder, and adding the caramel dip to the shake, rather than as a topping. Also, I saw today while I was at the grocery store, caramel extract in the cake decorating aisle!

Do I need protein powder?

You absolutely do not need protein powder to get your protein goals in the day. I have a full list of protein ideas that I eat the most, and protein powder is actually not that frequent in my diet!

Make it a balanced, portion controlled meal

If you choose a protein shake like this for breakfast (and there is no fruit or any other food group besides dairy, I would definitely eat this with fruit or oatmeal for a more balanced breakfast!
