For a simple energy ball on the go, that is not only tasty, but can fit within your calorie controlled diet, try these Almond Joy Energy Balls!
They not only taste like the candy bar, but they are great on the go, and help you stay on track with your weight loss goals.
My protein ball recipes all follow a VERY similar template. In fact, if you head over to my Monster Protein balls, it’s actually the same recipe, except I’ve swapped
- peanut butter for almond butter
- swapped vanilla extract with almond extract
- and swapped the M&M’s for coconut and milk chocolate chips!
There’s honestly a million ways you can vary the mix-ins and have completely different tasting protein balls, based on your preferences.
As far as the ingredients (and substitution ideas) for these Almond/chocolate “Almond Joy” balls go, I used:
- Almond butter– You could sub with sunflower seed butter or even peanut butter if you don’t have almond butter, but this will change the overall taste. And because I wanted these to taste like the almond joy candy bar, I opted for almond butter.
- Honey– As a sweetener, honey has my vote! But substitutions could include maple syrup, brown rice syrup, or agave nectar.
- Vanilla Protein Powder– You all know I like three protein powders: Clean Simple Eats, UMP, and Optimum Nutrition! But since I have an ABUDANCE of Clean Simple Eats powders, I generally default to using that one.
- Almond Extract– I REALLY love using extracts and flavor drops for adding flavor without calories to protein balls, (check out my entire post on low calorie ways to flavor protein balls here)
- Oats: While I just used old fashioned oats, quick oats, or oat flour works too. You can even just sub it altogether with all purpose flour. I’ve done this and love it! But then you can’t call it “gluten free” of course.
- Shredded coconut: I used classic sweetened coconut, but you can use unsweetened as well. It honestly doesn’t save too many calories, and it doesn’t taste as good. So, I’d keep the cheaper “sweetened” style of shredded coconut.
- And finally milk chocolate chips! You can use sugar free chocolate as a substitute if you are watching sugar. However, the sugar free chocolate chips, while I like them and use them often, they don’t save enough calories for me to justify the cost always. Those sugar free chocolate chips are EXPENSIVE! Am I right?!
Almond Joy Energy Balls
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup almond butter
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 2/3 cup oats
- 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
- 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips
Optional
- 1 ounce Almonds for a topping option
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients together except the chocolate chips. Scoop 1 tablespoon of dough and roll into a ball.
- Chill while you melt the chocolate (I use 1 minute at a time at 40% microwave power).
- After chocolate is melted, drizzle on top of balls and put in fridge until you are ready to eat.
- Optional for my picture so you would know what the flavor is: Add an almond, and extra coconut to the top. (this extra almond is not counted in the calories and macros)
