This year I decided to take a multi-week long culinary class. It was really cool to develop my culinary skills and even get out of my comfort zone to try cooking new things. I had a lot of fun! And my husband definitely enjoyed trying my “homework” each week. Haha

So, when Mother’s Day rolled around, my son bought me a mini culinary torch. (He knows I like to cook!). With the new tool in my kitchen, I decided to try adding caramelized bananas to my oatmeal! YUM!!!

It was a simple and fun way to diversify my breakfast. Definitely something I’ll have to do again.

After all, I eat oatmeal every day with my breakfast. Overtime I have come up with a LOT of different ways to prepare it. So wether you try this recipe or are in the mood for something else, you should check out my oatmeal recipes here!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to have a mini torch? – I’ll be honest, I haven’t tried it without the torch. However, I am pretty confident that you could use a lighter instead. It might take longer to get it hot enough to bubble, but a heat/flame source should caramelize the sugar.

What sweeteners can I use to caramelize the bananas? – You could try regular sugar, Monk Fruit Sweetener, Brown sugar, or Splenda. These are some of the most popular sugars that people have in their homes. My suggestion is to use Monk fruit sweetener if you have it, since it has 0 calories.

Can I make this ahead of time? – While you could prepare this in advance, I would wait to warm it up and add the caramelization until you’re ready to eat. I think this dish is best served right after preparation.
