It’s undeniable how much I love frozen bananas blended with protein powder in a food processor. While I have made lots of protein ice cream over the past 18 months, recently, I’ve preferred taking a frozen banana straight from the freezer, blending it with protein powder, and making ice cream the consistency of soft serve.
The other way I make protein ice cream is to make a protein shake, and then freeze it. This works well if you want to prep the ice cream ahead of time, and save it for later.
But, if you have a few extra minutes, and you remembered to freeze the banana, making this caramel soft serve is a GAME CHANGER!
How to make this soft serve protein ice cream
The most essential step in making soft serve protein ice cream is to have pre-frozen bananas. I’ve thrown bananas in the freezer with the peel on, and I’ve also put them in the freezer in a bag, peeled.
I prefer to peel first. When I freeze bananas with the peel, the process of peeling the frozen banana softens the banana a bit, and I want to put it in the food processor absolutely frozen. No softening. This is the best way to get ice cream, and not a smoothie or shake.
I cut my bananas in half and throw all the halves in a bag. Then, when I’m ready for ice cream, I take two frozen bananas and add them to the food processor.
Second, is the protein powder. The Clean Simple Eats protein powder is actually really good for this ice cream. I also like the Optimum Nutrition vanilla, if you are going for ice cream sundae’s or other flavors. But, the strange thing is, my favorite flavored protein powder for drinking (you can see my list here), did not do well as Ice cream! It tasted a little chalky to be honest.
But, the Clean Simple Eats Toffee caramel powder was DELICIOUS as ice cream. You can check out their other flavors too.
For flavor mix-ins, I used two things. Both of these are OPTIONAL, because the ice cream already tastes like caramel with the protein powder.
However, if you are using vanilla protein powder, than these two mix-ins will be vital!
- Skinny Mixes Caramel Cheesecake
- Walden Farms caramel dip
When to eat this caramel banana protein ice cream
I generally end my day, after dinner with the protein ice cream. If I make it earlier in the day, I just want to make more! Portion control is still important, even when you are eating healthy foods.
But, if I wait till after dinner, it’s a nice treat after a long day, and I can savor it!
